Top 3 Fright-Night Movies of the Week
To kick-off the start up of my new blog, I'm beginning fresh with a category that all should love: Top 3 Fright-Night Movies (of the week). I mean why not? Who doesn't love a good horror film anyways? The list I put together contains: the movie title, a trailer link, a short description, and my review of the favorites that I've recently watched/re-watched.
!!WARNING THE FOLLOWING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!
- Babadook portrays the bad guy as a 'boogieman', but with a unique and interesting twist. The drama starts with the classic scary bedtime story being read to a young boy by his mother. The mother is played by Essie Davis and the son is played by Noah Wiseman. The book titled Babadook appears in the family's bookshelf one night and peaks the son's curiosity. After reading the book to her son, Samuel, the mother, Amelia, grows tired of his constant whining and fear of the so called Babadook who is said to be coming to "get" Samuel. The real twist is that Amelia ends up almost becoming the Babadook creature after been driven to nearly murdering Samuel. Don't worry though because she then expels it from her being. Oddly, she lets the creature live with her and Sam in the basement because "you can never get rid of the Babadook".
- I rate this movie 5/5 because of its twist on the 'boogieman' concept and its amazing ability to use the Babadook to frighten viewer while only physically featuring him a few times.
Hush (2016) Hush Trailer
- Hush is a paranoia inducing movie starring Kate Siegal and John Gallagher Jr., in which a deaf-mute woman is stalked by a murderer in home. Kate plays the female victim, Maddie, who is tormented by an unknown intruder, played by John, who is hell-bent on killing her. A good portion of the movie is Maddie trying to out smart the stalker who has her trapped in her house in the woods, and also cut off her connections to her neighbor and to the outside world.
- This movie was very atmospheric and enticing. Using the woman's disabilities, it told a story in a new perspective. I rate it 5/5 for having a great plot, jump scares, eeriness, and a twist ending.
Unfriended (2014) Unfriended Trailer
- Unfriended takes a different approach to the average paranormal activity theme. The movie's setting takes place online, mostly over Facebook and Skype. The vengeful spirit of Laura Barnes haunts six friends, Blaire, Mitch, Jess, Ken, Val, and Adam, who she tortures using games, blackmail, and threats over the Skype call. She ends up getting her revenge by exposing who leaked a video of her getting '
pissdrunk' at a party (a video which she committed suicide over). - I really enjoyed watching this because they added a modern drop to the paranormal theme, although it could be a bit corny in some scenes. The last few minutes were my favorite part resulting from my love of unforeseen endings. It had just the right amount of censorship and gore so I rate this 4.5/5.
